Would a "dumb" phone suit my parent better than a smartphone?

A simple mobile, often called a feature phone, is worth considering if your parent mainly wants to make calls and send texts. Doro feature phones offer physical buttons and straightforward menus, without relying on a touchscreen. If joining WhatsApp chats or making video calls is important to them, a Doro smartphone may be a better fit. Start with what your parent wants to do, rather than their age.

Should I choose a flip phone or a phone that doesn’t fold?

A flip phone folds shut to protect the screen and help prevent accidental button presses in a pocket or bag. A non-folding phone keeps the screen and keypad visible, with nothing to open before using it.

Think about which design the user would find more comfortable to hold and handle, and involve them in the choice.

My parent struggles with small buttons and text. Could a Doro phone help?

Doro feature phones have large, separated buttons and clear visual contrast, making numbers easier to recognise and helping your parent press the intended key. Easy-to-read displays also make it simpler to see who is calling or read a message. Screen sizes and display settings vary, so compare the models with your parent’s eyesight and comfort in mind.

My parent often misses calls or struggles to hear me. What should I look for?

Look for adjustable ring and call volume, clear speech and a vibrating alert. Doro feature phones offer loud, clear sound, while models such as the Leva L20 also have vibration and visual call indicators.

If your parent wears hearing aids, check compatibility with their particular hearing aids before buying—hearing aid compatibility does not necessarily mean direct Bluetooth streaming.

Can a Doro phone help reduce unwanted calls?

Selected models, such as the Doro Leva X10, can be set to accept calls only from approved contacts.

This can help reduce unwanted calls while keeping family and friends within easy reach. Set up the contact list together, remembering that legitimate callers using an unrecognised number—such as a hospital or delivery driver—may also be blocked.

Can my parent keep their current mobile number?

Yes. Getting a new phone does not have to mean changing their number. If your parent is also switching mobile providers, they can request a PAC code from their current provider and give it to the new one to transfer their number. That means friends, family and other important contacts can continue using the number they already know.

Can my parent call me without searching through a contact list?

Yes. Selected Doro phones have dedicated contact buttons, so important people are easier to reach without navigating through menus. The Doro 780X, for example, has three contact buttons for three trusted people.

Other models offer shortcuts to favourite contacts, giving your parent easier access to the people they call mos
